The Twinning Project on “Establishing Efficient Protection and Control System of Geographical Indications (GIs) in Georgia” is implemented for the second year. Its aim is to facilitate development of the geographical indications and appellations of origin system in Georgia and its harmonization with the European Union system of GI protection. The main beneficiary of the Project is the National Intellectual Property Center of Georgia Sakpatenti. The project will provide an opportunity, through sharing experience and knowledge of leading countries in the GIs field, to create corresponding administrative and institutional mechanisms which will enhance the geographical indications protection and control system in Georgia, strengthen the capacity and deepen the knowledge in this field.
On June 9, 2020, the fifth meeting of the Steering Committee and the discussion of the Quarterly Report took place. At the meeting parties considered the activities completed according to the Action Plan.
Within the Twinning Project, together with other issues foreseen by the Quarterly Plan, the following items were implemented over this period:
A geographical indication is the name of a geographical place, which indicates a certain geographical area and is used to designate the goods the specific quality or reputation of which are attributable to that geographical area, which in its turn is due to the particular geographical environment and human factors. The geographical indication serves to inform consumers concerning the origin of the goods as well as the characteristics related with the place of origin.
