A memorandum of understanding was signed between the National Intellectual Property Center of Georgia – “Sakpatenti” and the Department of the Official Language. According to signed document, Sakpatenti and the Department of the Official Language will implement joint educational, research and other forms projects. The ceremony of signing the memorandum took place at Sakpatenti head office and the document was signed by Ms. Nino Chikovani, Acting Chairperson of Sakpatenti, and Mr. Giorgi Alibegashvii, Head of the Department of the Official Language.
For the purpose of development and popularization of the official language and demonstration of the linguistic diversity of Georgia, taking into account the unified ten-year program (strategy) of the official language, a cycle of trainings will be delivered for Sakpatenti staff on new rules of transcription-transliteration of different languages in the Georgian language. The knowledge and experience received at the trainings will assist the staff members of the Office to ensure consolidation of the standards of the Georgian literary language during registration of trademarks, geographical indications and other subject-matters of industrial property in Georgia, as well as implementation of other actions defined by the legislation.
“Based on a specificity of Sakpatenti activities, entity faces the problem of transliterating foreign countries applicants names in Georgian”, - Ms. Nino Chikovani noted at the meeting. Mr. Giorgi Alibegashvili highlighted problems existing in the Georgian language and the importance of establishing the unified rules of transliteration. He also stressed the necessity of additional elaboration of rules of transliteration from other languages.
The Department of the Official Language is a legal entity under public law which ensures protection of the constitutional status of the official language, its popularization, establishment and introduction of the standards of the Georgian literary language. The Department of the Official Language develops the unified program and policy of the official language, gives recommendations to public authorities and local self-government bodies, legal entities under public and private laws, and promotes correct use and protection of the official language.
