Ways
of implementation of a new project and perspectives of future cooperation were
discussed by Mr. Soso Giorgadze, Chairman of the National Intellectual Property
Center, with Mr. Sandris Laganovskis, Director of the Institutional and
Cooperation Service, European
Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), and Mr. Ignacio de Medrano, Head of the International
Cooperation Service, EUIPO, at the meeting held at Sakpatenti.
The EU-Georgia Intellectual Property Project (EUGIPP) is drawing to a close. The Project, which is implemented by the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) with the support of the European Union, is aimed to develop and strengthen the intellectual property system in Georgia. The Closing Event is held at Tbilisi Marriott Hotel, which is attended by Mr. Soso Giorgadze, Sakpatenti Chairman, Mr. Sandris Laganovskis, Director of the Institutional and Cooperation Service, EUIPO, Mr. Ignacio de Medrano, Head of the International Cooperation Service, EUIPO, Mr. Martin Marianov, EUGIPP Project Leader, Ms. Ketevan Khutsishvili, Programme Manager of the Delegation of the European Union to Georgia, as well as representatives of Sakpatenti and various state agencies, project experts and beneficiaries.
The IP case-law compilation of European court decisions was presented at the High School of Justice. The compilation was published in the Georgian language within the EU-Georgia Intellectual Property Project (EUGIPP). The work has been compiled on the basis of the decisions of the General Court of the European Union (GCEU), the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) and the Boards of Appeal (BOA) of the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO).
On April 26, 1970,
the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) officially started
functioning. 30 years later, in 2000, this day was declared as the World
Intellectual Property Day.
It is
noteworthy that in Georgia, very soon after restoration of its independence, on
August 20, 1992, the Patent Office of Georgia “Sakpatenti” was established.

Within
the EU Georgia Intellectual Property Project (EUGIPP), a seminar took place in
Tbilisi Holiday Inn Hotel, aimed to improve the activity of the Chamber of
Appeals functioning at the National Intellectual Property Center of Georgia –
“Sakpatenti”. Sakpatenti is working actively on adopting the recent
international practice of fast and effective dispute resolution and on
improvement of the work of the Chamber of Appeals, which will have a positive
impact on the development of the business and scientific fields, as the
activity of the Chamber of Appeals is directly linked to both fields. For
business fast and fair resolution of disputes related to trademarks and designs
is essential, and for the scientific circles – effective resolution of disputes
related to their inventions and utility models.
The joint
delegation of the National Intellectual Property Center and the Parliament of
Georgia is visiting Valdepeñas to get
acquainted with the geographical indications system of the Kingdom of Spain.
The delegation is composed of
Mr. Soso Giorgadze, Sakpatenti Chairman, Ms. Nino Chikovani, Deputy
Chairperson, and Mr. Gela Samkharauli, First Deputy Chairperson of the Agrarian
Issues Committee of the Parliament. Within the visit, on March 24, a meeting
was held at the Regulatory
Council of the association of Spanish appellation of origin “Manchego” cheese,
which controls the compliance of products protected by geographical indications
with quality requirements defined by the specifications.
The joint delegation of the National Intellectual Property Center and the Parliament of Georgia, composed of Mr. Soso Giorgadze, Sakpatenti Chairman, Ms. Nino Chikovani, Deputy Chairperson, and Mr. Gela Samkharauli, First Deputy Chairperson of the Agrarian Issues Committee of the Parliament, is paying an official visit to Madrid. Within the visit, the delegation of Georgia met with Mr. José María Calleja Rovira, Secretary General of the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office (OEPM). During the visit, which is aimed to deepen bilateral cooperation in the intellectual property field, members of the joint delegation of Sakpatenti and the Parliament of Georgia got acquainted with the specificity of the IP pre-diagnostic service at OEPM. Sakpatenti is working actively to introduce this service at the National Intellectual Property Center of Georgia.
On March 15, to raise the staff qualification, the professional development program started at Sakpatenti. The activity, organized by the Sakpatenti Training Center, covers three training series, which will be delivered by leading experts from the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO). The program is implemented within the EU Georgia Intellectual Property Project (EUGIPP), which is aimed to support the intellectual property system in Georgia, namely, to elaborate trademark and design examination and to harmonize it with the EU legislation and practice.
On March 23, 2023, 15:00, a Webinar
on Mediation of Intellectual Property (IP) and Technology Disputes will
be held, co-organized by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO)
Arbitration and Mediation Center and Sakpatenti. The event is organized within
the Memorandum of Understanding signed between WIPO and LEPL National
Intellectual Property Center “Sakpatenti”. The webinar will be delivered by
leading specialists from WIPO, who will share with the participants WIPO
practice and experience in the direction on settlement of disputes through
mediation.
