Unauthorized Use of “Sulguni” and Georgian Wine “Kakheti” was Prevented in Poland and Latvia

LEPL National Intellectual Property Centre of Georgia Sakpatenti applied to the European Commission Directorate-General for Agriculture and Rural Development and requested prevention of unauthorized use of the appellation of origin of Georgian wine “Kakheti” (Kakhuri) as well as the geographical indication of Georgian cheese “Sulguni”.
In particular, in the Polish network of commerce “Lewiatan” facts of selling of wine “Kakheti Premium”, bottled in Ukraine, bearing the appellation of origin of Georgian wine “Kakheti” (Kakhuri), were revealed.
Along with this, cheese “Sulguni”, produced in Latvia by a Latvian company, was sold in Riga, Latvia.
As a result of the contacts established with the Polish and the Latvian parties, in accrdance with Article 175 of the Association Agreement between Georgia and the European Union, the relevant bodies of these countries carried out appropriate administrative measures.
Namely, in case of the cheese the labeling was changed, whereas the wine batch was withdrawn from the network of commerce.
