February 28, 2018
On February 28, 2018, a meeting took place between Mr. Nikoloz Gogilidze, Chairman of National Intellectual Property Centre of Georgia Sakpatenti, and Mr. Marcus Höpperger, Director, Madrid Registry, Brands and Designs Sector, World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), at Sakpatenti Office in Mtskheta. During the meeting the parties considered several ongoing projects which are mostly linked with integration of Sakpatenti databases into the WIPO registration system. In particular, by means of the WIPO E-filing tool, the Georgian users will be given an opportunity, to use the Georgian interface to extend electronically an application filed with Sakpatenti to the member states of the Madrid System. In addition, the international applications where Georgia will be indicated as a country of extension automatically will be received by Sakpatenti.
The WIPO representative also held a meeting with examiners of Sakpatenti Department of Trademarks, Geographical Indications and Design and received information directly from them concerning the current issues related to receiving and extension of international applications through the Madrid System in Georgia.
The Madrid System is an international tool for extension of trademark protection to foreign countries, on the basis of which, an applicant by means of filing a single application in a single language can cover a wide geographical area – 116 member states of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
Georgia is a member of the Protocol Relating to the Madrid Agreement Concerning the International Registration of Marks from 1998.
