41st Session of the Standing Committee on the Law of Trademarks, Industrial Designs and Geographical Indications

On April 8-11, 2019, the Forty-First Session of the Standing Committee on the Law of Trademarks, Industrial Designs and Geographical Indications of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) took place in Geneva, Switzerland. Mr. Irakli Kasradze, Head of Department of Trademarks, Geographical Indications and Design of Sakpatenti participated in the Session.
During the Session various items envisaged by the Agenda were discussed, among these, two proposals by Georgia and 11 member states of WIPO:
Proposal Concerning the Protection of Country Names and Geographical Names of National Significance (document SCT/39/8 Rev.3) and Proposal Concerning the Protection of Country Names and Geographical Names of National Significance in the Domain Name System (DNS) (document SCT/41/6).
In addition, a meeting took place with the management of OriGIn – the global alliance of geographical indication, during which details of forthcoming OriGIn Biannual Meeting 2019 to be held in Georgia were discussed. Sakpatenti representative also participated in a workshop organized by OriGIn, aimed to raise awareness among WIPO member states on simplification of geographical indications protection in foreign countries jurisdiction and in the Internet.
Within the Session, a meeting also took place with the delegation of Ukraine, the parties discussed the ongoing negotiations process concerning signing the “Agreement Between Georgia and Ukraine on Mutual Recognition and Protection of Geographical Indications, Appellations of Origin and Indications of Source”.
