The Second Mission of the Twinning Project

Today, on May 13, 2019, within the framework of the Project on “Establishing Efficient Protection and Control System of Geographical Indications (GIs) in Georgia”, a delegation of the Ministry of Agriculture of Italy visited Georgia. The Project, which is implemented within the EU funded Twinning Project, envisages the development of the current system of geographical indications in Georgia.
During the meeting, a set of draft amendments to the Law of Georgia “On Appellations of Origin and Geographical Indications of Goods” will be discussed, in addition, the issue of compliance of these draft amendments with the European Union legislation will be scrutinized in detail.
The main beneficiary of the Project is the National Intellectual Property Center of Georgia Sakpatenti, which is given an opportunity, through sharing experience and knowledge of leading countries in the field of geographical indications, to create administrative and institutional mechanisms which will enhance the GI protection and control system in Georgia. The Project also envisages strengthening of the role of producers groups and associations in the development of the geographical indications system.
The second series of meetings of Georgian and foreign experts at the office of the National Intellectual Property Center of Georgia Sakpatenti will last five days.
