“Khashmi Saperavi” was Granted Protection on the Territory of the European Union

Today, on January 23, 2020 a meeting of the EU-Georgia Sub-Committee on Geographical Indications took place in Brussels, envisaged under the Association Agreement with the European Union, during which the National Intellectual Property Centre of Georgia SAKPATENTI, on behalf of Georgia, signed Decision N1/2020 of the Geographical Indications Sub-Committee modifying Annexes XVII-C and XVII-D to the Association Agreement between the European Union and the European Atomic Energy Community and their Member States, of the one part, and Georgia, of the other part.
The given Decision recognizes renewal of lists of geographical indications, protected according to the principle of reciprocity on the basis of the Association Agreement. In particular, as a result of the signed Decision, as of today, protection was granted on the territory of the European Union to the geographical indication of Georgian wine “Khashmi Saperavi”. The list of the EU geographical indications, protected on the territory of Georgia, was also renewed.
At the Sub-Committee meeting it was stressed that on the facts of infringement of rights of the geographical indications: Churchkhela and Parmigiano Reggiano Cheese on the territories of the Parties, both Parties reacted in due time and applied effectively the administrative mechanisms provided for by the Association Agreement. During the meeting attention was also focused on other important issues related to the geographical indications system of the Parties.
The EU-Georgia Sub-Committee on Geographical Indications is set up on the basis of the Association Agreement to regulate issues of geographical indications between the Parties. The Sub-committee meetings are held annually. Today the fourth session was held.
