Delegation of Kazakhstan Visited Sakpatenti

On February 14, 2020, a meeting took place at SAKPATENTI Office in Mtskheta between Mr. Yermek Kuantyrov, Director of the National Institute of Intellectual Property of the Republic of Kazakhstan, and Ms. Manan Pruidze, Acting Chairperson of SAKPATENTI.
Within the meeting the parties discussed various issues of cooperation in the intellectual property field and outlined the future plans. The issue concerning the signing of the Agreement between Georgia and the Republic of Kazakhstan “On Mutual Recognition and Protection of Geographical Indications” was considered.
During the meeting the Georgian party noted that one of the priority directions of Georgia is the protection of wine, spirits, mineral waters and other agricultural products on the international level. Therefore, it is reasonable to conclude a bilateral agreement with the Republic of Kazakhstan on mutual recognition and protection of geographical indications. in case of signing this agreement, the Parties according to the principle of reciprocity will recognize and ensure the legal protection of geographical indications on the basis of the national legislations, as a result of which the probability of production of counterfeit goods marked with Georgian appellations and their circulation on the Kazakhstan market will be reduced. It is noteworthy that on the basis of direct filing of applications Sakpatenti has already registered 21 Georgian appellations of origin in Kazakhstan.
