Georgian Tangerine and Georgian Hazelnut – Sakpatenti Starts Working for Registration of Two New Geographical Indications

Within the EU funded Twinning Project on “Establishing Efficient Protection and Control System of Geographical Indications (GIs) in Georgia” (GE/16 ENI EC 0318), Sakpatenti starts working for registration of two new geographical indications. The issue was discussed on the 7th meeting of the Steering Committee of the Project, held on March 30, 2021.
The project which assists Georgia in development of the unique marketing tool, the geographical indications system, and in full use of the related benefit, will be completed on August 31, 2021. The Action Plan of the subsequent months, signed at the meeting of the Committee, envisages continuation of work for the registration of Racha Ham and Gurjaani Peach.
Within the Project, the plan of activities is being elaborated, aimed at popularization of the system of geographical indications and raising awareness, which includes creation of videos, tutorials and animated videos. The plan also covers holding various training and working meetings for staff members of enforcement entities, such as the Investigation Service of the Ministry of Finance, the Customs Department and the Monitoring Department, which are working on issues related to the enforcement of rights. In addition, training on certification and control mechanisms will be organized for producers, representatives of the Ministry of Environment Protection and Agriculture of Georgia, the National Wine Agency and National Food Agency.
