“Kaliandre” – New Variety of Apple Developed by Pupils of Gori Public School № 8

Moot discussion on new variety of apple “Kaliandre” as an intellectual property subject-matter was held and protectability was discussed during the event organized on occasion of the World Intellectual Property Day. Pupils of Gori Public School № 8 creatively expressed the knowledge received at intellectual property lessons and displayed their works for public. It is noteworthy that the pupils were involved in the implementation of one of the components of the EU-Georgia Intellectual Property Project (EUGIPP) - “Creativity and Intellectual Property in Georgian Schools”.
At the event, the pupils presented the business project related to “Kaliandre”, to intellectual property trainers of Sakpatenti Training Centre and experts participating in the EUGIPP, in which they reflected the prototype of breeding of new apple variety, title, logo, product characteristics and instruction for care, also defined the product price and promotion campaign including video commercial script and messages.
The event was preceded by trainings of selected public schools’ teachers in intellectual property teaching methodology by trainers of Sakpatenti Training Centre and delivering creativity and intellectual property lessons developed within the training plan. It is noteworthy that owing to the joint efforts, the pupils received knowledge and were able to present the prototype of the new apple variety derived by breeding and the business plan in front of critical audience. The results of the final event demonstrated the efficiency of the objectives of the Project “Creativity and Intellectual Property in Georgian Schools” - development of creative thinking among pupils by using the learning materials, understanding of creativity as a source of obtaining financial and moral benefits and analyzing intellectual work as a property and importance of the given field in general.
Event aimed to facilitate integration of intellectual property into the basic education system is the pilot version of teaching intellectual property and representatives of public schools of Tbilisi and regions of Georgia were involved in its implementation. The pilot version was developed by Sakpatenti as the main beneficiary of the EUGIPP and by the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO). The three-year EUGIPP Project, aimed to strengthen the intellectual property system in Georgia, will be completed at the end of 2022.
