PDP on Geographical Indications is being Held this year with a Renewed Format

Professional Development Program (PDP) on Geographical Indications of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and Sakpatenti has been opened today. Representatives of public agencies employed in the field of intellectual property will receive practical knowledge and skills on geographical indications system in remote mode until July 2, 2021. The event is organized by Sakpatenti Training Centre and WIPO Academy and in partnership with China National Intellectual Property Administration.
Within the high standard program introduced in cooperation with WIPO, which is led by trainers of Sakpatenti Training Centre, invited experts and representatives of WIPO, participants will study mechanisms of protection of geographical indications, different systems of geographical indications and will get familiarized with the grounds of refusal of registration of this IP subject-matter. In addition, on the basis of practical examples, the participants will get familiarized with similar geographical indications and trademarks leading to a likelihood of confusion and examples of successful GIs.
In 2021, PDP is taking place with a renewed format. Training covers three stages. At the first stage, the participants of the training course already passed the Distance Learning Course on Trademarks, Industrial Designs and Geographical Indications (DL-302). At the second stage, which has been started today, issues related to geographical indications and appellations of origin are being discussed. The third stage of training will cover identification of the questions of interest of the participants and drafting of a thesis together with the WIPO coordinators.
The Professional Development Program (PDP) of the WIPO Academy is aimed to promote raising awareness of the target audience on the intellectual property field and its subject-matters and the development of the IP system in the country. Upon the completion of the program, the persons who will pass the training course will receive relevant certificates of successful completion of the relevant phases envisaged by the action plan of the program.
