Geographical Indications and Border Measures

A two-day seminar on border measures related to geographical indications was held for Georgian customs officers.
The seminar, organized by Sakpatenti, took place within the Twinning Project on “Establishing Efficient Protection and Control System of Geographical Indications (GIs) in Georgia” and 25 representatives of the Customs Department of Revenue Service of the Ministry of Finance of Georgia participated in it.
The event was opened by Ms. Manana Pruidze, Acting Chairperson of the National Intellectual Property Centre of Georgia Sakpatenti, Mr. Giovanni Piccirillo, representative of the Department of International Relations of the Italian Customs Agency, and Mr. Elguja Berandze, Deputy Head of the Customs Department of the Revenue Service of the Ministry of Finance of Georgia.

During the seminar, representatives of the Italian Customs Agency acquainted participants with the structure and specificity of work of the Italian Customs Agency, mechanisms of combating dissemination of counterfeit goods and shared their experience on the basis of practical examples. Within the event, issues related to movement, inspection, suspension and seizure of counterfeit goods as well as theoretical and practical aspects of measures implemented by the Customs were also considered.
The seminar, through sharing experience and knowledge of Italy, will facilitate introducing efficient procedures of combating counterfeiting of geographical indications, strengthening the interagency cooperation and capacity building of representatives of the Customs Department.
The Twinning Project on “Establishing Efficient Protection and Control System of Geographical Indications (GIs) in Georgia”, ongoing at Sakpatenti, is aimed to promote the development of the system of geographical indications and appellations of origin in Georgia and its harmonization with the system of protection of geographical indications existing in the European Union.
