Daren Tang Pledges WIPO’s Support for the country to the President of Georgia

The president of Georgia, Mrs. Salome Zourabichvili meets with the WIPO Director General Mr. Daren Tang within the official visit to Geneva.
The meeting between the president of Georgia and WIPO Director General is another expression of close and fruitful cooperation with the organization. During the meeting, a ranges of issues have been discussed, including further strengthening ties around IP education, including at a university level.
“With all this, we will help our economy, our youth, women and SMEs to protect our products better, facilitating better export,” said President Zourabichvili.
“Generally using IP is not just as a legal tool, but as a very powerful catalyst and enabler for jobs, for investments, for business growth, for economic development and social vibrancy. WIPO is here to stand with you as you journey onward”- said Mr. Tang and pledged WIPO’s continuing support for Georgian small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), women entrepreneurs and youth.
The president of Georgia invited the WIPO Director General to the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the National Intellectual Property Center of Georgia- Sakpatenti, which will be celebrated in 2022. Georgia joined WIPO in 1991 and Sakpatenti, as a country representative actively participates in the work of WIPO standing committees and working groups. According to the WIPO’s estimation, Georgia is a strong promoter, in particular, of the International System of Appellations of Origin and Geographical Indications (Lisbon System), and has accorded special attention to the protection of its famous geographical indications including wines, cheese and mineral waters.
