“Mukhuri Honey” – A New Geographical Indication

A new geographical indication – “Mukhuri Honey” was added to the State Registry of geographical indications protected in Georgia. Henceforth Mukhuri Honey made of nectar of flowers of the Mukhuri (Khobistskali) Gorge of Chkhorotsku Municipality with its distinctive taste and aroma will be recognized at the state level.
An application requesting registration of the geographical indication was filed by the Association “Mukhuri Honey” in the National Intellectual Property Centre of Georgia -Sakpatenti.
According to the specifications, Mukhuri Honey is characterized by averagely developed aroma, moderately sweet, pleasant and exclusive characteristic taste. It is mostly collected from May to August when main honey plants bloom.
Beekeeping has long-term history and traditions in Chkhorotsku. On the one hand, It is defined by the exclusive features of the local honey bees and, on the other hand, by existence of manifold honey plants, which in its turn is conditioned by the local terrain, height of the place, different climate and soil composition.
In order to be recognized as a geographical indication, a product protected by the geographical indication shall meet the certain criteria. For consumers this kind of product is associated with high quality. A mark on the product packaging with the indication: “Protected Geographical Indication”, promotes sales and consequently brings benefits to manufacturers.
Due to the special, distinctive features and increased demand, the market price of products related to a geographical place may be several times higher than the price of the similar products. The increased economic value even ensures high competitiveness and better opportunities to explore new markets.
