“Kheta Tangerine” was Granted the Status of a Geographical Indication
December 27, 2021
The distinctiveness of tangerine produced in Khobi Municipality was confirmed by the state. “Kheta Tangerine” was added to the State Registry of geographical indications. An application requesting registration was filed with the National Intellectual Property Centre of Georgia – Sakpatenti by the association “Kheta Tangerine”.
According to the specifications, “Kheta Tangerine” is golden-yellowish, turning orange with ripening. It has a specific, refreshing sourish-sweetish taste, sugar content balanced with acidity ratio and distinct aroma.
The distinctiveness, uniqueness and high quality of „Kheta Tangerine“ is due to a number of factors. Citrus gardens are cultivated on the Southern slope of Mount Urta, at the average height of 30-80 meters above sea level.
The geographical indication “Kheta Tangerine” is used for tangerine of species „Unshiu“ (C. Unshiu Marc.). However, the old title “Japanese Tangerine” is no longer used for Georgian tangerines. This is based on the study on “Unshui” tangerines conducted in Japan, according to which it was confirmed that the long-term influence of the hereditary features of “Unshiu” tangerine and the agro-climatic factors of Georgia resulted in the peculiar local forms of tangerine.
The tradition of horticulture in Georgia is almost a century-old. The use of know-how and technologies made a significant contribution not only to the increase of the tangerine plantings, but also improving its quality.
Products protected by geographical indications are distinguished from others exactly by their high quality. One of the main advantages of geographical indications is their reputation, which is a valuable intangible asset and their protection is very significant. A mark on the product packaging with the indication that the product is protected as a geographical indication will make it more attractive for consumers, which will promote sales and will be beneficial for manufacturers.
