Training on Geographical Indications is Held for Bolnisi Local Producers

Tamarisi early strawberry, Kachagani early peach and cherry, Marneuli early potato and tomato, Tsalka late potato, Dmanisi wheat and pepper - this is an incomplete list of the products, identified as potential geographical indications in Kvemo Kartli region. Therefore, National Intellectual Property Centre of Georgia “Sakpatenti” organized and held training on geographical indications and appellations of origin for “Bolnisi Agro Center” staff and local producers.
The training aim is to raise awareness of the representatives of the Agro Center and local producers on the geographical indications system. Ms. Sophio Ebralidze, trainer of Sakpatenti Training Center, is introducing to the participants the mechanisms of protection and registration procedure of geographical indications, also makes an overview on the specifications of goods and peculiarities of protection of geographical indications. The exercises and examples presented during the training will assist local producers in identification of potential geographical indications among the goods produced by them, as well as in commercialization of their activity through the use of geographical indications.
Geographical indication is the name of a geographical area, which is used to designate the goods the specific quality, features or reputation of which are attributable to the particular environment of this geographical area and human factor, which covers traditional knowledge and experience of production existing in the local population. Geographical indications play a significant role in the regional development of countries, which creates new jobs and increases incomes, reduces work force drain and stimulates attraction of new manpower, also increases the region awareness and facilitates development of rural tourism.
