Sakpatenti Hosted Delegation of Uzbekistan

A delegation of Uzbekistan visited Sakpatenti. Within the working visit, the Uzbek counterparts familiarized with the system of protection of geographical indications and appellations of origin of Georgia and the activity of Sakpatenti in this direction. During the visit to Tbilisi office of Sakpatenti they attended a short lecture course of the Head of “OriGIn Georgia” Mr. David Gabunia, who focused attention on main aspects of protection of GI products and in general the role of this object in the economic, social and cultural development of the country.
At the head office of Sakpatenti in Mtskheta a meeting took place with the management of the Office, during which the guests expressed a desire of close cooperation with Sakpatenti in order to study more profoundly and comprehensively the current legislation regulating geographical indications in Georgia and to share Sakpatenti’s practical knowledge and experience gained over the years in his field. During the conversation, Ms. Manana Pruidze, Acting Chairperson of Sakpatenti, promised to render assistance to the Uzbek counterparts and expressed hope that, within the cooperation, working meetings of the parties and participation of the Uzbek sectoral specialists in study projects, as well as planning and implementation of strategic goals and objectives in the direction of geographical indications will assist formation and development of the GI indications system in Uzbekistan.
Members of the delegation received at Sakpatenti significant information regarding the planned legislative amendments to the GI legislation of Georgia. Heads of Departments and examiners of Sakpatenti overviewed the Georgian legislative framework on geographical indications, control mechanisms, procedures and steps of registration of GIs. The role and importance of Sakpatenti in the formation and development of the geographical indications system was also highlighted. The two-day visit of the Uzbek delegation passed in a working atmosphere, the guests noted that on the basis of familiarization with the geographical indications system of Georgia, the gained knowledge and experience, introduction of the GI system in Uzbekistan is planned.
