Visit of Mr. Daren Tang, Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), to Georgia

Today, Mr. Daren Tang, Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), will pay his first official visit to Georgia. On October 12, 2022, Mr. Tang will open the International Conference “The Role of IP Offices in the National Innovation Ecosystem”, dedicated to the 30th Anniversary of the establishment of the National Intellectual Property Center of Georgia – “Sakpatenti”.
The visit of the Director General of WIPO acquires special importance from the viewpoint of deepening relations and cooperation of Georgia with the the World Intellectual Property Organization, as the development of the system of Intellectual property protection is one of the main priorities for the Government of Georgia, which it is closely linked with the cultural, social and economic growth of the country.
Within the visit of the Director General of WIPO to Georgia, meetings are scheduled with Mr. Irakli Garibashvili, Prime Minister of Georgia, and Mrs. Salome Zourabichvili, President of Georgia. Mr. Daren Tang will also meet with Mr. Levan Davitashvili, Vice Prime Minister of Georgia, Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia, and Mr. Mikheil Chkhenkeli, Minister of Education and Science of Georgia.
The visit of the Director General of WIPO is a result of the longstanding fruitful cooperation with Georgia and appreciation of the 30-year activity of the National Intellectual Property Center of Georgia – “Sakpatenti”, which represents Georgia at WIPO.
It is noteworthy that with the support of WIPO Georgia has achieved significant progress in the region in the development of the relevant field. To ensure effective protection of intellectual property, by active and close cooperation of Sakpatenti with WIPO, numerous projects were implemented over the years. The legal system regulating intellectual property was developed and global projects were implemented directed at promotion of educational and innovative activities. It is significant that intellectual property rights are one of the major components of the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement with the European Union, whereas sharing experience and knowledge of WIPO experts has enabled Georgia to achieve substantial progress in the implementation of the DCFTA action plan.
At the bilateral meeting of Mr. Daren Tang, to be held at the National Intellectual Property Center of Georgia – “Sakpatenti”, a Memorandum of Understanding will be signed between the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the National Intellectual Property Center of Georgia – “Sakpatenti” on Alternative Dispute Resolution in the Field of Intellectual Property.
During the visit scheduled at Georgia’s Innovation and Technology Agency (GITA), Mr. Daren Tang will hold a meeting and discussion with representatives of Georgian start-ups.
The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations, which unites 193 member states. Georgia has been a member of WIPO since 1991.
