Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Met with Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia

Mr. Daren Tang, Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), is paying an official visit to Georgia. Within the visit, Mr. Daren Tang had a meeting with Mr. Levan Davitashvili, Vice Prime Minister, Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia, where parties discussed the importance of development of the intellectual property system in Georgia.
At the meeting it was noted that intellectual property is one of the main priorities for the Government of Georgia and through longstanding cooperation of WIPO and Sakpatenti, by WIPO’s support and assistance, Georgia has achieved significant progress in the development of this field, which ensures the effective protection of intellectual property in the country.
As a result of the close cooperation of Sakpatenti with WIPO, Georgia made tangible steps in administration and legal protection of intellectual property rights, development of the geographical indications protection system, drafting of the intellectual property strategy and promotion of innovation activities. At the meeting attention was focused on long-term cooperation initiatives of Georgia with WIPO and prospects of their implementation, including further expansion of activities in the direction of protection of geographical indications and establishment of the global international platform, which will facilitate deepening of relations, enhancement of the intellectual property system in Georgia and the economic development of the country.
The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations, which unites 193 member states. Georgia has been a member of WIPO since 1991.
