Georgian Technical University Obtained Patents for Six Inventions and One Utility Model

According to the decision of the National Intellectual Property Center of Georgia – “Sakpatenti”, in the current year, the Georgian Technical University (GTU) obtained patents for six inventions and one utility model. The GTU inventions are related to a natural gas leak control, alarm and management device and a gas detector, a vehicle for disabled persons wheelchairs motion up-down onto stairs and a system for special need persons motion on stairwell, a hail protection device for vineyards and waterintaking construction disposed under riverbed. The GTU also became owner of a patent for one utility model which is related to a method for cement-concrete filler preparation and filling. The University as a patent owner was granted the exclusive right, during the period of the patent protection of the inventions, to produce, sell, disseminate, import or use them otherwise in the course of trade. Mr. Soso Giorgadze, Chairman of Sakpatenti, personally handed over the certificates confirming the right to Mr. David Gurgenidze, Rector of the University, and the inventors. The patent certificates were placed at the GTU Intellectual Property Law Laboratory, which has been functioning for already 1 year.
During the meeting held at the GTU on December 28, 2022, Mr. Soso Giorgadze, Chairman of Sakpatenti, and Mr. David Gurgenidze, Rector of the University, agreed that Sakpatenti and the Georgian Technical University, within the Memorandum of Understanding, will carry out joint projects aimed at the development and stimulation of scientific-research activity in future as well. The implementation of the planned activities will facilitate raising awareness in the intellectual property field among students, training of highly qualified scientific staff, development of inventive activity and creation of new technologies.
Sakpatenti handed over to the University the specialist literature. The scientific works include annotations of international conventions, treaties and agreements translated and published by Sakpatenti. This educational material will assist students to familiarize with the basic principles and provisions of international protection of intellectual property subject-matters. In addition, Sakpatenti will provide for the University patent-information service free of charge and will assist it in drafting an intellectual property policy document.
It is noteworthy that in order to stimulate active involvement of the local scientific centres in research activities and filing more patent applications, a 70% reduction on fees for registration of IP subject-matters is available at Sakpatenti for higher educational institutions.
