Prime Minister met with Chairman of the National Intellectual Property Center

Mr. Irakli
Garibashvili, Prime Minister of Georgia, met with Mr. Soso Giorgadze, Chairman
of the National Intellectual Property Center of Georgia.
During
the meeting, the Chairman of Sakpatenti informed the Prime Minister about the
projects implemented by the National Intellectual Property Center and
introduced the future plans.
As
Mr. Soso Giorgadze noted, Sakpatenti is working toward protection of
geographical indications and appellations of origin of Georgia abroad. In this direction,
an Agreement on Mutual Recognition was signed with the Republic of Moldova, in addition,
direct registration of intellectual property subject-matters was carried out
and is still ongoing in several countries.
According
to Sakpatenti Chairman, in order to attract and train qualified staff, a paid
internship program was launched. Some of the interns have already been accepted
from various universities and the competition is also underway.
Mr.
Soso Giorgadze highlighted that Georgia has taken effective steps in the field
of copyright and related rights. In this direction, together with the Culture
Committee of the Parliament, work is ongoing on a relevant draft law. In
addition, through a tender competition, an auditing company has been selected
which will study the issues of management of authors’ property rights by collective
management organizations operating in Georgia.
Along
with this, Georgia has obtained the right to host the Worldwide Symposium on
Geographical Indications and the Symposium will be held in June in Tbilisi.
The
meeting took place at the Administration of the Government.
