April 26 is the World Intellectual Property Day
April 26, 2023
On April 26, 1970,
the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) officially started
functioning. 30 years later, in 2000, this day was declared as the World
Intellectual Property Day.
It is
noteworthy that in Georgia, very soon after restoration of its independence, on
August 20, 1992, the Patent Office of Georgia “Sakpatenti” was established.
Today, to
celebrate the World Intellectual Property Day, an exhibition of the first
patent certificates for inventions issued by Sakpatenti in independent Georgia
was organized. The documents dated to 1992-93 reflect the achievements of
Georgian inventors in the field of engineering, medicine and other branches of science,
among these is the patent issued in the name of Ms. Maia Kiviladze, for an
invention in the field of medicine, which is in force since December 4, 1992.
The theme of this year’s World
Intellectual Property Day campaign is “Women and IP: Accelerating Innovation
and Creativity”. It is noteworthy that already in the previous year the
National Intellectual Property Center of Georgia announced encouragement and
empowering women inventors as a priority objective for 2023.
It should also
be noted that Sakpatenti Chairman Mr. Soso Giorgadze opened the exhibition
exactly together with those staff members who have worked at Sakpatenti since
1992. There are 6 women and 1 man among them: Ms. Lali Chanturia, Ms. Ketevan
Begiashvili, Ms. Mzia Chachanidze, Ms. Irina Mugalashvili, Ms. Lali Akhalkatsi,
Ms. Nino Kitiashvili and Mr. Irakli Diasamidze. These are the merited staff
members who participated directly in issuing the first patent documents in the
history of independent Georgia.
