Mr. Soso Giorgadze Held a Meeting with President of the Global Alliance of Geographical Indications (oriGIn)

Within the Worldwide Symposium on Geographical Indications, Mr. Soso Giorgadze, Chairman of Sakpatenti, together with Mr. David Gabunia, Director of oriGIn-Georgia, met with Mr. Riccardo Deserti, President of oriGIn, and his accompanying persons. The meeting is aimed to deepen cooperation between the parties and to implement joint activities directed at the development of the system of protection of geographical indications 

For the development of the GI system of a country, one of the important preconditions is creation of favourable conditions for high-quality, competitive products, as well as definition of criteria and standards which a product having specific features shall meet. Thus, cooperation of Georgia with oriGIn is very important, especially, in terms of active identification of products eligible for GI protection, definition of specifications and ensuring legal protection. Together with oriGIn-Georgia, Sakpatenti is planning to strengthen support of Georgian farmers and entrepreneurs, which is expressed in identification of the possibility of registration of their products as geographical indications and determination of the export potential. 

The Organization for an International Geographical Indications Network – oriGIn – is a non-for-profit Non-Governmental Organization, established in 2003 and based in Geneva. oriGIn is a global alliance of Geographical Indications (GIs), representing up to 576 associations of producers and other GI-related institutions from 40 countries. oriGIn’s goal is to campaign for the effective legal protection and enforcement of GIs at the national, regional and international level.
