Mr. Soso Giorgadze Met with Managing Director of the Global Alliance of Geographical Indications

Within the 64th Series of Meetings of the Assemblies of Member States of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Mr. Soso Giorgadze, Chairman of Sakpatenti, met in Geneva with Mr. Massimo Vittori, Managing Director of the Global Alliance of Geographical Indications (origin).

At the meeting, the parties spoke about the results of the negotiations, which were held in Tbilisi within the framework of the World Symposium on Geographical Indications, among these, they discussed and determined important aspects of cooperation, the working format and the details of organization of joint events.

Sakpatenti is working actively on identification and registration of potential geographical indications. At present, 64 Georgian geographical indications are registered. The registration of a geographical indication increases the awareness and value of Georgian products on different markets of the world. Such products have unique quality, reputation and special features. 

Sakpatenti carries out protection of Georgian geographical indications abroad by various means, including legal mechanisms stipulated by international agreements, bilateral agreements on the protection of geographical indications and direct registration of geographical indications in different countries. 

Cooperation between Sakpatenti and oriGIn facilitates revealing of potential Georgian geographical indications, improvement and development of the system of protection of geographical indications in Georgia. 

During the meeting, the parties agreed that oriGIn will engage actively in the development of various target projects and will participate in the process of solving the problems faced by Sakpatenti. 

At the end of the meeting, Mr. Massimo Vittori invited the members of the Georgian delegation to the International Conference on Geographical Indications, which will be held in October of the current year at the headquarters of oriGIn in Geneva.
