Mr. Soso Giorgadze Met with Representatives of the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO)
July 10, 2023
Within the 64th session of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) General Assembly, representatives of the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) held a meeting in Geneva with the Heads of Intellectual Property Offices of the Eastern Partnership countries. The meeting was attended by Mr. Soso Giorgadze, Chairman of the National Intellectual Property Center of Georgia, and Ms. Nino Chikovani, Deputy Chairperson.
The meeting was related to the initiative of the European counterparts regarding implementation of a new joint project in Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine. The EUIPO’s decision to implement a joint project on the regional level was taken after successful completion of the EU-Georgia Intellectual Property Project (EUGIPP). The project, launching of which is planned in 2024, is aimed to support the three countries in the development of national intellectual property systems, namely, in creation of effective mechanisms of registration, protection, management and enforcement of intellectual property rights.
It was noted at the meeting that use of intellectual property as a fundamental instrument in creating a favourable environment for innovation, creativeness and free competition. The project will contribute to the economic and cultural development of Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine, strengthening of potential of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) of these countries and raising the level of investment attractiveness. These achievements will subsequently boost harmonization of the systems on the regional level as well as alignment to the EU rules, standards and practices and participation in the global protection system.
At the meeting the parties discussed the ways and means of implementation of the project, considered the action plan and agreed to define a preparatory period and to carry out jointly the preliminary works of the project.
The European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) is responsible for registration of trademarks and designs by means of a single application throughout the European Union, EUIPO shares experience and supports in harmonizing practices the IP Offices of the EU Member States and international partners.
