Mr. Soso Giorgadze Met with Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO)

Mr. Soso Giorgadze, Chairman of Sakpatenti, within the 64th Series of Meetings of the Assemblies of Member States of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), met with Mr. Daren Tang, Director General of WIPO.
At the meeting the parties noted that intellectual property is the key to overcome the challenges facing the modern world, and in this regard, first of all, more knowledge, a bigger and comprehensive campaign to raise awareness on intellectual property is necessary. Georgia is actively involved in this campaign. In order to introduce the teaching of intellectual property in school education, 108 teachers from 28 schools were trained in the methodology of teaching IP throughout the country, 700 lessons on intellectual property were delivered, attended by 2200 pupils.
During the meeting the fruitful cooperation of Sakpatenti and WIPO over the years was emphasized, in particular, Sakpatenti and WIPO jointly organized the International Conference “The Role of IP Offices in the National Innovation Ecosystem”, during which Director General of WIPO Mr. Daren Tang visited Georgia, the Worldwide Symposium on Geographical Indications, a major and large-scale event in the field of intellectual property protection, which was held in Tbilisi and was attended by more than 200 representatives from 64 countries. At the meeting the ongoing joint projects were also considered - the support of the Sakpatenti Training Center, which implies the development and introducing of a joint Master’s program, as well as the project for implementation of training courses on intellectual property for the private sector and the judicial system.
Sakpatenti Chairman expressed gratitude to Mr. Daren Tang for close and active cooperation. Mr. Daren Tang in his turn welcomed the cooperation of Sakpatenti and WIPO and expressed his appreciation of the joint efforts and desire of the parties to develop and elaborate the intellectual property system in Georgia.
The parties agreed that WIPO will continue to support Sakpatenti and will facilitate in the development of intellectual property as a strategically important direction for the country.
Within the Assemblies, the working meetings of Sakpatenti Chairman are also planned with other senior officials of WIPO - Ms. Wang Binying, Deputy Director General of WIPO, and Mr. Habip Asan, Director of WIPO Division for Transition and Developed Countries.
