Mr. Soso Giorgadze Met with President of the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office (TURKPATENT)

Within the 64th Session of the General Assembly of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Mr. Soso Giorgadze, Chairman of Sakpatenti, met in Geneva with Mr. Cemil Başpinar, President of the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office (TURKPATENT). The aim of the meeting was to deepen and strengthen cooperation between the two countries in the direction of intellectual property.

At the meeting it was noted that taking into consideration the neighbourhood policy it is important for the parties to define intellectual property protection strategies, exchange information and best practices related to patent and trademark examination and protection mechanisms. During the conversation it was stressed that in order to achieve the common goal, it is important to implement joint projects, including organization of regional conferences and seminars. In addition, active cooperation between the parties will reveal common interests and approaches to create the environment for innovative activity and investment. Measures directed at the development of the intellectual property system will contribute to the elimination of shortcomings in this field and the creation of effective protection mechanisms.

During the meeting attention was also focused on issues of legal protection of origin-based products. It was noted that geographical indications are one of the important tools that influence entrepreneurial activities as well as business development and, thus, the economic progress of a country. Mutual cooperation in the direction of exercising control and protection of geographical indications was emphasized.
