Sakpatenti Launched a New Project together with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO)
October 30, 2023
The National Intellectual Property Center of Georgia – “Sakpatenti”, together with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), launched a new project which is aimed to support farmers, associations and producers of Georgian unique products marked with geographical indications and appellations of origin.
Within the project, international expert Mr. Pascal Bernardoni will introduce to Georgian producers methods of better management of production. Targeted training and seminars are planned, which involve the study of establishing proper communication with customers, as well as proper advertising of the goods of Georgian producers. In addition, they will be able to deepen their knowledge in the direction of increasing and improving competitiveness.
It should also be noted that the foodstuffs marked with geographical indications and appellations of origin are more profitable, which in its turn contributes to the development of the agricultural sector. One of the confirmations of this is the joint study of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) - “Strengthening sustainable food systems through geographical indications”. The analysis of the economic impact of geographical indications was carried out in 9 thematic directions, according to which, marking of the appellation of origin of a region led to significant increase of the price of products (from 20% to 50%).
Sakpatenti ensures not only registration of intellectual property subject-matters, but also helps producers to get more benefits from the use of intellectual property resources.
The opening ceremony of the joint “Project on Collective Management, Branding and Commercialization of Selected Registered GI in Georgia” took place today at Sakpatenti Head Office. The event was opened by Mr. Soso Giorgadze, Chairman of Sakpatenti. Mr. Hasan Kleib, Deputy Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), addressed the participants remotely.
After the launch, one-day training was held for officials of state agencies, including Sakpatenti employees on the aspects of management of the geographical indications system. In particular, discussions were held on the link between the compliance of the quality requirements defined by the specifications and the area of production, the issues of evaluation of an application and best practices, various measures and importance of enforcement.
The preparatory works of the project started in the spring of the current year. The project will continue until March 2024.
