The First Meeting of the Republic of Moldova-Georgia Joint Committee on Geographical Indications was Held

The first meeting of the Republic of Moldova-Georgia Joint Committee on Geographical Indications was held in videoconference format. Together with representatives of Sakpatenti, representatives of the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia, the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia and the Revenue Service of the Ministry of Finance of Georgia participated in the meeting.
The Georgian party discussed with the delegation of Moldova significant issues related to protection of Georgian geographical indications. It is noteworthy that within “the Agreement between the Republic of Moldova and Georgia on Mutual Recognition and Protection of Geographical Indications”, 46 unique national products are protected in Moldova. At the meeting the parties agreed to exchange additionally an updated list to be protected both on the territories of Georgia and the Republic of Moldova. Within the mentioned Agreement, Georgia submitted 18 geographical indications/appellations of origin which will be granted protection in the Republic of Moldova.
The Georgian party informed the Moldovan counterparts on the reforms carried out in the intellectual property field, the Head of the Department of Trademarks, Geographical Indications and Design of Sakpatenti Ms. Meri Macharashvili delivered a presentation and spoke about the legislative amendments implemented in the intellectual property field and the registration processes.
On May 17, 2023, “the Agreement between the Republic of Moldova and Georgia on Mutual Recognition and Protection of Geographical Indications” entered into force. According to Article 11, “the Contracting Parties agree to set up a Joint Committee on geographical indications, consisting of representatives of both Contracting Parties with the purpose of monitoring the development of this Agreement and intensifying their cooperation and dialogue on geographical indications.”
