May 15, 2024
Today, the Parliament of Georgia adopted for the third reading the draft Law “On Patent Attorneys of Georgia”, which will regulate issues related to acquisition of patent attorneys qualification, registration and activity as well as issues of creation and functioning of the Association of Patent Attorneys.
Amendments deriving from the draft Law were made to the “Patent Law of Georgia” and the Law of Georgia “On Entrepreneurs”, which provides for harmonization of the mentioned laws with the Law of Georgia “On Patent Attorneys of Georgia” presented by the legislative package. On the basis of the reform of the institution of patent attorneys, a new standard of qualification exam of patent attorneys will be introduced – the insurance of professional responsibility of patent attorneys will become compulsory.
It is important that the patent attorneys themselves were actively involved in the process of developing the draft Law, and most of their recommendations were reflected in the final version of the draft Law.
The legislative package was introduced at the session by the Parliamentary Secretary of the Government Mr. Vakhtang Bachiashvili.
As a result, a totally new, modern institution will be established in the country, which will be focused on professional development and introduction of novelties, thus facilitating better protection of intellectual property and development of the field, in general.
