The 9th Anti-Scam Network Meeting was held in Alicante, Spain, organized by the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO). Georgia as EU Candidate Country participated in the meeting held in Alicante for the first time. On behalf of the National Intellectual Property Center, Ms. Nino Chikovani, Deputy Chairperson of Sakpatenti, attended the event.
The meeting was opened by Mr. Andrea Di Carlo, Deputy Executive Director of the European Union Intellectual Property Office, who noted specially the participation of Georgia in the meeting and highlighted the importance of involvement of Sakpatenti in the Anti-Scam Network. He also discussed the effective measures implemented by the Georgian state authorities to curb fraud in the intellectual property field.
Fraud is a crime which implies misappropriation of fees relating to protection of intellectual property rights, which undermines the relationship of trust between intellectual property protection organizations and users, damages the field proper and the process of encouraging creative activity. Therefore, prevention, identification and relevant responding to such actions are of crucial importance.
The main purpose of the above-mentioned Network is to combat fraudulent activities. Similar meetings facilitate, on the basis of exchange of best practices, ensuring the development of effective mechanisms in response to existing challenges.
It is noteworthy that since 2015 the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), Regional and National Intellectual Property Offices and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) have been collaborating actively for establishing the Anti-Scam Network.
