Within the WIPO General Assembly Mr. Soso Giorgadze Met with the Delegation of the Republic of Kazakhstan

Mr. Soso Giorgadze, Chairman of the National Intellectual Property Center of Georgia – “Sakpatenti”, within the 65th Series of Meetings of the Assemblies of the Member States of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), held a meeting with the delegation of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The meeting was attended by Ms. Botagoz Zhakselekova, Vice-Minister of Justice of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Ms. Sholpan Abdreyeva, Director of the Department of Intellectual Property Rights of the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Kazakhstan,
and Ms. Aidyn Artykova, Deputy Director of the National Institute of Intellectual Property of the Republic of Kazakhstan, and on the part of Sakpatenti – Ms. Meri Macharashvili, Head, Department of Inventions and New Varieties and Breeds.
The participants of the meeting discussed the issues of deepening cooperation between the countries in the direction of intellectual property and emphasized the importance of signing of the memorandum on cooperation in the field of intellectual property, on which the parties are already working.
The parties paid special attention to the Agreement on Mutual Recognition and Protection of Geographical Indications and Appellations of Origin. It is noteworthy that a working group is already established to discuss the draft Agreement, which will work on the protection of geographical indications of both countries. On the basis of signing of the Agreement, Georgia and the Republic of Kazakhstan will recognize according to the principle of reciprocity and ensure the legal protection of geographical indications and appellations of origin on the basis of the national legislations. As of today, Georgia has submitted through individual registration 22 geographical indications (appellations of origin) for protection in Kazakhstan, including mineral waters, wine and Chacha.
At the meeting, the parties also discussed the issues of preparation and organization of various educational programs, including conferences and seminars, which will facilitate exchange of information and sharing of experience on the achievements of the two countries in the intellectual property field.
