Sakpatenti Representatives Participated in the Event on Occasion of the 30th Anniversary of the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) and the Community Plant Variety Office (CPVO)

Ms. Meri Macharashvili, Head of Department of Inventions and New Varieties and Breeds, and Ms. Darejan Mchedlidze, Head, Department of Trademarks, Geographical Indications and Design, Sakpatenti, participated in the joint seminar: “30 Years of Incentivising Innovation”, organized on occasion of the 30th anniversary of the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) and the Community Plant Variety Office (CPVO). The event was held at the European Union Intellectual Property Office in Alicante, Spain.
During the seminar, open and constructive dialogue took place between stakeholders in the field of plant variety rights, in order to outline further cooperation synergies within the EU4IP project. The participants of the event also discussed possibilities of use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the intellectual property field. At the same time, attention was focused on topics related to trademarks, trade secrets and geographical indications, including IP strategies and their impact on the Single Market. The event also looked at the impact of new legislation and the challenges associated with counterfeiting. International experts shared with the participants their insights, knowledge and experience on various areas of intellectual property and spoke about the positive impact of the given field in society.
At the seminar, Mr. João Negrão, EUIPO Executive Director, noted: “Today marks a very special occasion as we celebrate the 30th anniversary of both the EUIPO and the CPVO. Thirty years dedicated to collaboration, innovation, and furthering the protection of intellectual property across the European Union and beyond. In the past three decades, IP has evolved into a critical tool for fostering innovation and supporting economic growth, from trade marks and designs to plant variety rights and geographical indications.”
Within the event, a bilateral meeting of the Georgian party with a representative of the Community Plant Variety Office (CPVO) took place. At the meeting, plans for future cooperation in the direction of plant varieties were outlined, in particular, on the plant variety protection system and regulating legislative framework of Georgia and the European Union, as well as opportunities of support with a view to harmonization of legislation of Georgia with the EU legislation.
