The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has published the rankings of the Global Innovation Index 2024, in which Georgia as compared with the indicator of the previous year (65th place) has moved up by 8 positions and ranks 57th among the top 60 countries. The Global Innovation Index (GII) is a ranking of innovative capabilities and performance of world economies, which evaluates 133 world economies according to their innovation capabilities. For the purposes of research, countries are evaluated according to different criteria, including evaluation of such significant areas as: as Institutions, Human capital and research, Investment and infrastructure, as well as Creative outputs, Knowledge creation and diffusion. The Index is envisioned to capture a complete picture of innovation, it comprises around 80 indicators, including measures on the political environment, education, infrastructure and knowledge creation.
The Global Innovation Index (GII) is based on comprehensive analysis of innovation taking into consideration two sub-indices – the first: expenditure on innovation (the Innovation Input Sub-Index), which refers to the volume of investments made in the direction of innovation in a country, and the second: - innovative products (the Innovation Output Sub-Index), which involves translation of innovation from generated knowledge to a concrete output. This can be a new technology, a unique design, an improved method that offers a new, more effective way for solving a problem. Each sub-index is structured according to the main components and evaluation is based on up to 80 indicators in 8 thematic categories. It is noteworthy that in 2024 the rankings of Georgia have improved in both sub-indices.
The results of Georgia in the Global Innovation Index 2024 demonstrate the progress of the country in terms of economic and innovative development, being reflected in improvement of scores in various components. Namely, the indicators of 7 main components out of 8 have improved considerably, including in such areas as: Business sophistication, Human capital and research, Creative outputs and Infrastructure.
