Sakpatenti Shared Experience in the Field of Geographical Indications with the Staff of the Intellectual Property Office of Uzbekistan

A 2-day webinar was held for representatives of the Intellectual Property Office of Uzbekistan, organized by Sakpatenti Intellectual Property Teaching and Training Center. The training activity was planned in response to an official request from the Uzbek counterparts and was aimed to share the experience of Georgia in the field of geographical indications. Currently Uzbekistan is at the initial stage of formation of the GI system and familiarization with international best practices is a priority for it.
Within the webinar, the geographical indications system of Georgia was discussed, including national and international registration procedures, the reform of the legislation related to GI protection, carried out in 2023-2024, as well as the legislative framework and practical aspects of the rights enforcement. Along with this, the discussion touched upon the strategies of identification of potential geographical indications and peculiarities of developing specifications, activities implemented for raising awareness, the importance of international cooperation and successful projects.
The webinar was led by Ms. Darejan Mchedlidze, Head, Department of Trademarks, Geographical Indications and Design, Sakpatenti, Mr. Nikoloz Rogava, Chief Specialist, Legal Department, Sakpatenti, Mr. Irakli Kartvelishvili, Deputy Head, Division for Fighting Against Customs Rules Violation, Investigation Service, Ministry of Finance, and Ms. Lili Darchashvili, Specialist, N(N)LE “OriGIn Georgia”.
It is noteworthy that the successful experience of Georgia, including the registration of 5 new geographical indications and appellations of origin last week, highlights once again the efforts of Sakpatenti in the development of this area.
Sakpatenti continues deepening of international cooperation and dissemination of best practices in the field of geographical indications by organizing training activities, which also facilitates raising awareness of unique Georgian products on international markets.
