Sakpatenti Delivered a Presentation at the Information Session on Copyright and Generative Artificial Intelligence, Held in Geneva

An Information Session on Copyright and Generative Artificial Intelligence was held in Geneva, Switzerland. The event took place at the headquarters of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). Ms. Mery Macharashvili, Head of the Department of Inventions and New Varieties and Breeds, National Intellectual Property Center of Georgia – “Sakpatenti”, participated in the session. The event was held in conjunction with the 46th Session of the Standing Committee on Copyright and Related Rights.
The session was devoted to panel discussions. The questions explored during two panels covered copyright and artificial intelligence, copyright in relation to material generated by artificial intelligence.
Generative artificial intelligence is a technology that uses complex algorithms and machine learning models to memorize rules from certain data. It can create new content of a text, image and music that is similar in style or structure to the original and determines the speed of content creation.
At the session, the participants discussed the approaches of the participating countries to balancing various interests that may be affected by AI development. Attention was also focused on copyright and its consideration in cases where AI models are trained on datasets that contain copyright-protected materials. Challenges related to the question of copyright ability in the context of AI-generated and AI-assisted material were discussed. In addition, at the panel discussions copyright infringement and liability in the context of AI-generated material were considered.
During the event, Sakpatenti representative spoke about Georgia’s experience in the field of copyright and artificial intelligence. Ms. Mery Macharashvili also focused attention on the reforms implemented in Georgia to improve the system of copyright protection and collective management of copyright.
