May 06, 2025
The “Women and IP Symposium for IPOS” was held at the headquarters of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in Geneva, Switzerland, in which the National Intellectual Property Center of Georgia – “Sakpatenti” was represented by Ms. Salome, Head of Administration Department.
The event was opened by Mr. Daren Tang, WIPO Director General, and Ms. Lisa Jorgenson, Deputy Director General. During the symposium, discussions were held on key themes such as: advancing women’s leadership and careers within IP offices; the impact of mentoring programs; innovative practices to support young women entrepreneurs; emerging data methodologies and policymaking to identify and address challenges women face in innovation and IP. Special attention was paid to strategies for evaluating and sustaining initiatives that benefit women innovators. The importance of public-private partnerships was also highlighted to create a more supportive IP ecosystem for women around the world.
Ms. Salome, Head of Administration Department, introduced to the symposium participants the vision of the office on empowerment of women and their involvement in the field of intellectual property protection at the level of internal institutional policy. Attention was focused on Sakpatenti practice in the direction of collecting and analyzing gender data. The statistics on women’s employment were presented, including data on employment of women on managerial positions. It was noted that out of 23 managerial positions at Sakpatenti, 14 are occupied by women, which is a clear example of gender equality at the office.
The symposium represents WIPO’s initiative within the IP and Gender Action Plan (IPGAP) and reflects strategic commitment of the organization to working with IP offices and governments to foster and advance women’s participation in IP and innovation.
