Sakpatenti Participated in the International Advanced Certificate Training Program of the World Intellectual Property Organization

Ms. Mery Macharashvili, Head of the Department of Inventions and New Varieties and Breeds, National Intellectual Property Center of Georgia – “Sakpatenti”, participated in the International Advanced Certificate Training Program for Patent Examiners, held in Hyderabad, India. The event was organized by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Academy, the Office of the Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trade Marks of India and the Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Intellectual Property Management (RGNIIPM).
Within the training program the patent system of India, legal and institutional structure as well as processes related to assessment of patentability criteria of inventions and stages of granting a patent were covered. The participants studied in detail main criteria of patentability – novelty, inventive step and industrial applicability. Special attention was also paid to legal procedures of consideration of applications and stages of application proceedings from drafting a search report to the final decision. Separate sessions were devoted to the international patent cooperation mechanisms, including the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT), as well as international patent classification systems and their role in the effective search and examination process.
The program participants were addressed by Mr. Victor Owade, Counsellor, Academic Institutions and Executive Program, World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Academy, who emphasized WIPO’s vision to support an inclusive IP ecosystem. Ms. Mery Macharashvili in her presentation introduced to the program participants information about the functioning of the patent system of Georgia and the search techniques used in the examination process. The training program will enhance the technical skills and knowledge of patent examiners working in different fields of technology in using the latest online patent search engines. Examiners will acquire practical skills to analyze patent applications and apply new techniques to assess and examine patent applications.
The training sessions were led by representatives of the World Intellectual Property Organization and practitioners of the Office of the Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trade Marks of India. Examiners from India as well as specialists from various countries, including Mongolia, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Nigeria, Bangladesh, Uganda and Trinidad and Tobago participated in the program.
