A 5-day summer camp “Intellectual Property and Innovations” was held in the village of Misaktsieli, Mtskheta Municipality. The event was organized by: the National Intellectual Property Center of Georgia – “Sakpatenti”, the Municipal Department for Culture, Education, Sports, and Youth Affairs of Tbilisi City Hall and N(N)LE “Tbilisi Sports and Youth Center”. 37 winners of the National Educational Olympiad, aged 15-18, participated in the event.
The camp was opened with a welcoming address by Ms. Tika Nebieridze, Deputy Chairperson of Sakpatenti. She thanked the youth for their interest and participation in the event and wished them success.
The summer camp was planned within the Memorandum of Cooperation signed between Sakpatenti and Tbilisi City Hall, which aims to promote raising awareness among youth in the field of intellectual property and education, through joint educational activities. The conceptual framework of the camp was specially developed by Sakpatenti Intellectual Property Education and Training Center. The training sessions were led by Sakpatenti representatives – Ms. Mery Macharashvili, Head of the Department of Inventions and New Varieties and Breeds, and Ms. Anuki Oboladze, Head of the Legal Department.
The program of the camp was aimed to introduce to the teenagers the intellectual property field, including providing information on inventions, trademarks, geographical indications, designs and new varieties and breeds, as well as works protected by copyright and related rights. During the training sessions attention was focused on innovations, modern technologies and also on protection of works generated by artificial intelligence.
The training was held in an interactive format through thematic sessions and practical assignments. In addition to the educational component, the camp included social and teamwork activities, cultural and creative events. The participants of the camp visited Sakpatenti Head Office in Mtskheta, where they familiarized with the procedures and work processes of intellectual property registration on site. Mr. Soso Giorgadze, Sakpatenti Chairman, personally hosted the participants and spoke with them about intellectual property, the role of education in personal development and its necessity. He also drew attention to the economic potential of intellectual property and noted that protection and effective use of intellectual property are one of the prerequisites for the economic development of the country, which in its turn creates new branches of industry and jobs. At the end of the camp, a quiz was held on intellectual property protection. Finally, the teenagers were awarded certificates confirming their participation in the camp.
One of the priority directions for Sakpatenti is to arouse among youth interest in the intellectual property field, to attract and actively involve them in various educational activities. It should be noted that active cooperation between Sakpatenti and Tbilisi City Hall in the direction of intellectual property protection will further promote generation of innovative ideas in the country, development of professional skills among the youth and stimulation of knowledge-based economy. Therefore, taking into account the successful cooperation, the parties have decided that the summer camp “Intellectual Property and Innovations” will become an annual event.
