Mr. Soso Giorgadze Met with the Minister of Justice of the Republic of Kazakhstan

Within the 66th Series of Meetings of the Assemblies of Member States of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Mr. Soso Giorgadze, Chairman of the National Intellectual Property Center of Georgia – “Sakpatenti”, met with Mr. Yerlan Sarsembayev, Minister of Justice of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
On the Georgian side, the meeting was attended by Ms. Nino Chikovani, Sakpatenti Deputy Chairperson, and on the side of the Republic of Kazakhstan – by Ms. Sholpan Abdreyeva, Chairperson of the Committee of Intellectual Property Rights of the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Mr. Sabit Akhmetov, Deputy Director of the National Institute of Intellectual Property of Kazakhstan (Qazpatent), and Ms. Aelita Mussabayeva, Attaché of the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Kazakhstan to the World Trade Organization (WTO).
The participants of the meeting discussed the possibilities of deepening cooperation between the countries in the field of intellectual property. Special attention was paid to the Agreement “On Mutual Recognition and Protection of Geographical Indications between Georgia and the Republic of Kazakhstan”, on which active work is currently underway. Based on the above-mentioned Agreement, Georgia and Kazakhstan according to the principle of reciprocity will recognize and ensure the protection of geographical indications on the basis of the legislation. As of today, Georgia has filed 21 appellations of origin of Georgian wines and mineral waters and 1 geographical indication “Chacha” for protection in Kazakhstan through individual registration.
In addition, cooperation between the two countries in the field of intellectual property also includes signing of the Agreement “On Cooperation in the Field of Protection of Intellectual Property Rights”.
During the meeting, the parties also discussed preparation and implementation of various educational programs, including organization of joint conferences and seminars, which will facilitate exchanging information and sharing experience on the achievements of the two countries in the field of intellectual property.
