October 16, 2025
Staff members of the National Intellectual Property Center of Georgia – “Sakpatenti” participated in the training session of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). The online training was delivered by the Trademarks, Industrial Designs and Geographical Indications Department, Brands and Designs Sector, WIPO, individually for Sakpatenti staff.
The topic of the training session was use of eLisbon platform and legal procedures relating to registration of appellations of origin and geographical indications. During the session the participants discussed in detail the Lisbon System procedures, including the rules of implementation of the Geneva Act. The presentation covered main features of the eLisbon platform, such as application filing process and means of management of registrations (modifications, cancellations, grants and refusals of protection, etc.).
The Lisbon System is the international legal and administrative mechanism which ensures international registration and protection of appellations of origin and geographical indications.
It is noteworthy that in the spring of the current year Georgia has acceded to the Geneva Act of the Lisbon Agreement on Appellations of Origin and Geographical Indications. The accession was preceded by a large-scale reform carried out by Sakpatenti which significantly enhanced legal mechanisms and improved procedures related to registration.
Following the accession to the Geneva Act, the area of protection of unique Georgian products has expanded considerably, covering 61 countries. Accession to the Act is for Georgia a significant step forward which ensures not only broader international protection of our unique products but also their competitiveness on the global market.
