Sakpatenti and “OriGIn – Georgia” Participated in the Fifth Regional Consultation on Geographical Indications (GIs) in Europe and Central Asia

To promote sustainability of geographical indication systems in the region, the Fifth Regional Consultation on Geographical Indications (GIs) in Europe and Central Asia was held online. Ms. Darejan Mtchedlidze, Head of the Department of Trademarks, Geographical Indications and Design, Sakpatenti, and Ms. Sophio Sanikidze, Director of “OriGIn – Georgia”, participated in the meeting.
The participants of the consultation considered the role of GI systems in the economic, social and environmental development of countries, also discussed the opportunities for strengthening cooperation between the state, business and international organizations. Expansion of the dialogue around this topic is aligning with the recent publication of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and oriGIn: “On Developing a Roadmap Towards Increased Sustainability in Geographical Indications Systems.”
At the meeting, Ms. Darejan Mtchedlidze and Ms. Sophio Sanikidze shared with the participants the local experience regarding the legislative amendments implemented in Georgia in the field of geographical indications. In particular, they overviewed the new Law “On Appellations of Origin of Goods and Geographical Indications”, which has regulated in a new way the rule of registration of geographical indications and increased the role of producer groups in the geographical indications system. In addition, representatives of Sakpatenti and OriGIn – Georgia focused on priority issues planned for strengthening the GI system in 2026-2027.
