The First Stage of the Qualification Examination of Patent Attorneys is Underway

For the first time since 2014, the qualification examination of patent attorneys is held in Georgia. Up to 50 persons registered for participation in the qualification examination to obtain the status of a patent attorney. I Stage of the examination – testing – was held today, and II Stage, which covers written examination, will be held in 2 weeks.

The examination materials were prepared by foreign experts. Highly qualified experts from France, the USA and Thailand, selected by the recommendation of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the European Patent Office (EPO), were actively involved in the process. Georgian specialists also participated in the development of the tasks, which ensured harmonization of the examination with the international practice and its tailoring to the national legislation. 

The qualification examination of patent attorneys was preceded by a large-scale reform of the national intellectual property system, carried out in the recent years, which was aimed to align the institution of patent attorneys with the modern requirements and support development of the profession of patent attorneys. Especially important in this regard was the new Law “On Patent Attorneys of Georgia”, prepared by Sakpatenti and adopted by the Parliament of Georgia on May 15, 2024. The Law is based on the best international practices and it regulates in a new way the legal framework of the given profession as well as the institutional issues. 

On the basis of the new Law, major changes were carried out: specialization of patent attorneys was defined in two directions – general and trademarks, continuous professional education and insurance of professional responsibility became compulsory. In addition, a new standard of the qualification examination was introduced, which facilitates selection of highly qualified patent attorneys, deepening of their professional knowledge,  development of appropriate skills, attraction of new professionals and, in general, formation of a professional corps.

The qualification examination was held at the Georgian Justice Training Center. The second stage of the examination – written examination – will be held on December 13.
