Mr. Soso Giorgadze Meets with Mr. Daren Tang, Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO)
July 10, 2026

Within the 68th Series of Meetings of the Assemblies of the Member States of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Mr. Soso Giorgadze, Chairman of SAKPATENTI, and Mr. Revaz Lominadze, Permanent Representative of Georgia to the UN Office and other international organizations in Geneva, met with Mr. Daren Tang, Director General of WIPO.
During the meeting, the Chairman of SAKPATENTI presented to Mr. Daren Tang the instrument of accession of Georgia to the Riyadh Design Law Treaty (RDLT), signed by the Prime Minister of Georgia Mr. Irakli Kobakhidze. On 26 June 2026, the Parliament of Georgia unanimously adopted amendments to the Law of Georgia “On Design”, bringing Georgia’s design legislation into line with the requirements of the Riyadh Design Law Treaty. This marks an important step in the process of further development of Georgia's intellectual property system and its approximation to international standards.
It is noteworthy that the regional conference jointly organized by WIPO and SAKPATENTI in Tbilisi in 2026 was dedicated to the Economics of Design, the Riyadh Design Law Treaty (RDLT), and the Hague System for the International Registration of Industrial Designs. Representatives from 14 European countries participated in the conference.
At the meeting, particular emphasis was placed on the important reforms and strategic initiatives implemented by SAKPATENTI. Among them, the International Master’s Program “Intellectual Property, Innovation and Entrepreneurship” stands out, which, based on the trilateral memorandum signed between WIPO, Kutaisi International University (KIU) and SAKPATENTI, was introduced at Kutaisi International University (KIU) from autumn 2025 and represents a unique educational opportunity in the region.
It was also noted at the meeting that, at the initiative of the Prime Minister of Georgia, a modern technological hub is being established in the former Parliament building in Kutaisi. The hub will also accommodate SAKPATENTI’s Training Center, equipped with modern and innovative technologies. After completion of the project, the new Training Center will provide training across all areas of intellectual property education and knowledge dissemination.
The meeting was also attended by Ms. Irina Khuluzauri, First Secretary of the Permanent Mission of Georgia to Geneva, and Ms. Anuki Oboladze, Head of the Legal Department of SAKPATENTI.
Within the WIPO General Assembly, the Chairman of SAKPATENTI has already met with Mr. António Campinos, President of the European Patent Office (EPO). Other important meetings are also planned with Mr. Hongbing Chen, Director of WIPO Academy, and senior officials of other international organizations.
In parallel with the high-level meetings, this year the Assemblies' main cultural event was organized by SAKPATENTI, dedicated to Georgia's cultural and historical heritage. The event was attended by the First Lady of Georgia, Tamar Bagrationi, and the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia, Mr. Alexander Khvtisiashvili. At the cultural event, SAKPATENTI hosted hundreds of delegates from different countries around the world, representatives of international organizations and the diplomatic corps, senior government officials and leading figures in the field of intellectual property.
