Mr. Soso Giorgadze Meets Mr. Hongbing Chen, Director of the WIPO Academy

Within the framework of the 68th Series of Meetings of the Assemblies of the Member States of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in Geneva, Chairman of Sakpatenti, Mr. Soso Giorgadze, met with Mr. Hongbing Chen, Director of the WIPO Academy.

During the meeting, the parties discussed joint projects implemented within the framework of cooperation between Georgia and WIPO, including the international Master’s Programme “Intellectual Property, Innovation and Entrepreneurship”, which was launched at Kutaisi International University in autumn 2025 based on the Trilateral Memorandum of Understanding signed between WIPO, Kutaisi International University, and Sakpatenti. The programme represents a unique educational offering in the region.

The meeting highlighted the active cooperation between Sakpatenti’s Intellectual Property Education and Training Center and the WIPO Academy, within the framework of which Sakpatenti’s Training Center annually implements numerous educational programmes. These include the International Advanced Certificate Training Program on Geographical Indications, the WIPO distance learning General Course on Intellectual Property (DL-101GE), and other specialized training programmes. The number of such programmes reaches 30–40 annually and brings together hundreds of participants. In this regard, one of Sakpatenti’s strategic priorities is the further strengthening of the capacities of the Training Center.

In this context, particular importance is attached to the establishment of a modern Technology Hub in Kutaisi, in the former Parliament building, initiated by the Prime Minister of Georgia, where Sakpatenti’s new Training Center will also be located. Upon completion of the project, the new Training Center will bring together all major directions related to the dissemination of knowledge in the field of intellectual property and will be equipped with modern and innovative technologies.

Sakpatenti’s Intellectual Property Education and Training Center was established in 2015 on the basis of a Memorandum of Understanding signed between the Government of Georgia and WIPO. With the support of the WIPO Academy and international partners, the Center has developed a multi-level intellectual property education system, ensuring the dissemination of both basic and specialized knowledge in the field of intellectual property protection.

In cooperation with the WIPO Academy, the integration of modern and relevant topics into educational courses is planned in the near future, including artificial intelligence, intellectual property in social media, copyright protection for the media and music industries, intellectual property protection in agriculture, and enforcement of intellectual property rights.

The meeting was also attended by Ms. Irine Khuluzauri, First Secretary of the Permanent Mission of Georgia to the United Nations Office and other International Organizations in Geneva, and Ms. Anuki Oboladze, Head of the Legal Department of Sakpatenti.

It is noteworthy that the Director of the Academy also attended the main cultural event held within the framework of this year’s Assemblies, which was organized by Sakpatenti and dedicated to Georgia’s cultural and historical heritage. Among the guests were the First Lady of Georgia, Tamar Bagrationi, delegates from more than 190 countries around the world, representatives of international organizations and the diplomatic corps, high-ranking officials of state institutions, and leaders in the field of intellectual property.

Within the framework of the WIPO General Assembly, the Chairman of Sakpatenti has already held meetings with WIPO Director General Daren Tang, as well as with the heads of the European Patent Office and other international organizations.
