Sakpatenti Representative Participated in the Work of the Session of the Intergovernmental Committee (IGC) of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO)

The 53^rd Session of the Intergovernmental Committee on Intellectual Property and Genetic Resources, Traditional Knowledge and Folklore (IGC), organized by WIPO, was held in Geneva. The main objective of the event was to hold international discussion on the issues of protection of traditional knowledge, cultural expressions and genetic resources. Ms. Anuki Oboladze, Head of the Legal Department of the National Intellectual Property Center of Georgia – Sakpatenti, participated in the session.

During the session, special importance is attached to participation of Indigenous and Local Communities in the process of discussion of the above-mentioned issues. In addition, it is important to ensure interrelation of their interests with the intellectual property system. Within the event, information sharing sessions were held. Participants shared experience of their countries, focusing attention on the challenges existing with respect to protection of traditional knowledge and cultural expressions, which will facilitate strengthening of the development of relevant  legal mechanisms related to these issues.

The WIPO Intergovernmental Committee on Intellectual Property and Genetic Resources, Traditional Knowledge and Folklore (IGC) was established in 2000. Over the years, the Committee represents the main international platform for multilateral negotiations and experience sharing in this field.
