October 09, 2026

Mr.
Givi Mikanadze, Minister of Education, Science and Youth of Georgia, and Mr.
Soso Giorgadze, Chairman of Sakpatenti, met with Mr.
Hongbing CHEN, Senior Director of the World Intellectual
Property Organization (WIPO) Academy. The meeting was held as part of the
opening event of the Sakpatenti Training Center in Kutaisi. The parties
discussed the importance of strengthening knowledge in the field of
intellectual property in Georgia. It was noted that strengthening knowledge in
the field of intellectual property at all levels of general, vocational and
higher education is a strategic priority for the development of the
intellectual property protection system. In this regard, close cooperation
between the Ministry of Education, Sakpatenti and the WIPO Academy is of
particular importance.
Attention
was given to opportunities for teacher training and the gradual integration of
intellectual property topics into school education. The
importance of the WIPO Academy’s “IP for Youth & Teachers” programme was
highlighted, including its potential to support the development of educational
resources, teacher training, pilot lessons, and the integration of the
programme into schools.
The
parties also highlighted the progress achieved in the field of higher
education. In parallel with the introduction of the joint international
Master’s program of WIPO, Kutaisi International University (KIU) and
Sakpatenti, on the initiative of Sakpatenti and KIU and in cooperation with the
Ministry of Education, a new field of study - “Management of Intellectual
Property and Innovation” - was added to the National Qualifications Framework
at the Master’s level in February 2025.
This
decision lays a solid foundation for the development of specialized academic
education in the field of intellectual property in Georgia, the training of
qualified professionals, and the strengthening of the innovation ecosystem.
The meeting also addressed
opportunities to support the development of intellectual property policies at
higher education institutions and research organizations in Georgia. In
cooperation with WIPO, Sakpatenti is ready to facilitate the sharing of relevant
guidelines, recommendations and international best practices with universities.
This cooperation will contribute to the protection of research results,
technology transfer and the commercialization of innovations.
