Mr. Soso Giorgadze together with Mr. António Campinos, President of the European Patent Office, visited the “Biochimpharm” Enterprise

Mr. Soso Giorgadze, Chairman of the National Intellectual Property Center of Georgia – “Sakpatenti”, together with Mr. António Campinos, President of the European Patent Office (EPO), visited the biotechnology company “Biochimpharm”. Within the visit, the delegation observed the technological processes underway at the enterprise. Mr. Rati Golijashvili, Managing Partner of “Biochimpharm", informed the visitors about the organization of the production and quality management mechanisms.
“Biochimpharm” is the only Georgian biotechnological company, which has obtained a European patent in this field. It is noteworthy that Georgia has a long-standing tradition of phage therapy. The rich scientific experience and continuous research activity still play an important role in the international scientific community in the field of bacteriophages. In this regard, the country maintains one of the leading positions from the viewpoint of fundamental studies as well as practical medical application.
“Biochimpharm” under this name was established in 1999 as a significant centre for production and commercialization of phage preparations. The “Biochimpharm” enterprise is distinguished by the introduction of high quality standards, the development of innovative products and international recognition, which determines its considerable contribution to the improvement of the healthcare system in terms of both scientific and economic development. It should be noted that the European Patent Office has granted the patent EP 3810162 B1 for the company’s invention “Antimicrobial composition against gastrointestinal infections and the use thereof”. [SK1.1]The bacteriophages included in the antimicrobial composition are deposited in accordance with the Budapest Treaty on the International Recognition of the Deposit of Microorganisms for the Purposes of Patent Procedure.
It is noteworthy that within the official visit to Georgia, Mr. António Campinos, President of the European Patent Office, together with the delegation, participated in the International Conference: “From Research to Impact: The Role of Patents in Technology Transfer”, organized by Sakpatenti.
