Professor James Moultrie of the University of Cambridge Delivered a Presentation at the WIPO–Sakpatenti Joint International Conference
April 30, 2026

At the international conference organized by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and Sakpatenti, which brought together representatives from 14 European countries, Professor James Moultrie of the University of Cambridge delivered a presentation on the economics of design.
In his presentation, he emphasized that successful design creates additional economic value, which is reflected both in increased product prices and in higher company profits. In this context, design is viewed not only as a visual element but also as a strategic tool that integrates technological, marketing, and user-oriented components.
James Moultrie is Professor of Engineering Design at the University of Cambridge. His research focuses on understanding and improving the use of design at project, organizational, and national levels. He has many years of industrial experience in the field of industrial design. Notably, he has received a Scientific and Technical Academy Award (Oscar) and an Emmy for his contribution to the development of optical lenses for the professional film industry.
The conference was dedicated to the role of design—one of the most important subject matters of intellectual property in the modern economy—as well as to key aspects of the Riyadh Design Law Treaty (RDLT) and the Hague System for the International Registration of Industrial Designs.
In addition to representatives from 14 European countries, the event was attended by high-ranking guests from WIPO, representatives of the Government of Georgia and the private sector, as well as prominent Georgian and international designers.
